Presentation by Sue, Stuart & Judith

The Auckland Disability Providers’ Network presented its oral submission to the Social Services Select Committee at the Waipuna Hotel and Conference centre on Wednesday 15th of August 2007. Sue McKinnon, Stuart Spackman and Judith Lunny made the presentation to MPs Russell Fairbrother, Lynne Pillay, Steve Chadwick, Judith Collins, Dr Paul Hutchison, Katrina Shanks, Bob Clarkson, Judy Turner, and Meteria Turei. Harry Duynhoven and Sue Bradford were absent.

Our group was allowed 10 minutes speaking time and Sue spoke for 10 minutes exactly. The notes for her presentation are here.

The question time was generous, well beyond the 5 minutes allotted. Questions related to:

  • the Disability Strategy where we were able to make the point about the few resources attached to the Strategy
  • Special Education and the atitutude of schools to inclusion of disabled children
  • the families/whanau of disabled
  • coping with a mainstream life

Judith Collins’ questions on Special Education have been followed up by a call to Judith Lunny from Allan Peachey the spokesperson for National on this subject.

The attitude of the Committee was warm and alert and an eagerness to understand the situation was apparent.
